Hamamönü, the oldest settlement area of Ankara and the original core of the city, was revitalized into livable spaces following restoration works initiated by Altındağ Municipality at the end of 2007. Street improvement projects carried out on Dutlu, İnci, Fırın, İnanlı, Mehmet Akif Ersoy, Hamamönü, and Sarıkadı Streets transformed the area into a touristic district in the very heart of Ankara.

In the 1920s, Hamamönü was home to the cadres who established the Republic of Turkey. It is also the area where the famous poet Mehmet Akif Ersoy wrote the İstiklal Marşı, Turkey’s national anthem.
