Ulucanlar Prison Museum
An 81-Year Memory
When Ulucanlar Prison was built in 1925 as the first prison of the Republic of Turkey, it undoubtedly didn't know what kind of suffering, loneliness, and despair it would witness in the future, or who it would house...
Closed in 2006 and transferred to Altındağ Municipality in 2009 for restoration, Ulucanlar Prison reopened its doors on June 15, 2011, with a completely different identity.
Having witnessed executions and prisoner rebellions during its 81 years of operation, and having housed important figures of Turkish political and literary life, Ulucanlar Prison now welcomes culture, art, and new hopes in its corridors. Ulucanlar Prison has been transformed into a museum and cultural arts center by Altındağ Municipality. Altındağ Municipality, achieving a first in Türkiye, prevented the demolition of the prison, thus contributing a significant landmark to Ankara.
Ulucanlar Prison, now welcoming visitors with a completely different face and bearing all its past, invites you to embark on a journey into your own inner self, alongside exploring Türkiye's recent history...
