The Gökyay Foundation Chess Museum, located in Altındağ, reflects the historical architecture of an old Ankara house. Spanning approximately 1000 square meters, the museum displays 590 chess sets from 103 countries, organized around four main themes, offering a unique journey through cultural connotations. Akın Gökyay's chess collection, begun in 1975 and reaching 412 sets, is the first and only registered chess collection in Türkiye, recognized by the Guinness Book of Records on January 31, 2012. The collection, which now boasts 540 sets showcasing the characteristics of the countries from which they were acquired, includes sets appealing to children such as Harry Potter, Asterix, and The Smurfs, as well as sets reflecting historical and political comparisons. From Madagascar to Chile, France to Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan to Mexico, the chess sets represent historical events and the unique cultural influences of each region. The collection features chess sets made from a wide variety of materials, including wood, metal, fishbone, marble, soapstone, felt, polyester, and even metal, sheet metal, and cast iron chess sets made from a mixture of marble powder.
