Alaaddin Camii

Ankara boasts numerous historical places of worship. Kocatepe, Hacı Bayram, and Ahi Yakup Mosques are just a few examples. But do you know which is Ankara's first mosque? Let's tell you right away: Alaaddin Mosque. This mosque was built between 1211 and 1236. A Seljuk-era structure, it was repaired by the Ottomans in 1361 and 1433, and most recently renovated by the General Directorate of Foundations in 1954. Therefore, it has lost much of its original character. The only original piece remaining is its pulpit, made of walnut wood.
